SOME KEY DEMOGRAPHIC STATISTICS REGARDING NEWARK ARE:- THE 2014 MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME OF NEWARK RESIDENTS ($31,698) WAS LESS THAN HALF THE STATEWIDE FIGURE ($72,062).- IN 2014, 32.5% OF PEOPLE AND 29.1% OF FAMILIES WERE LIVING IN POVERTY IN NEWARK.- IN 2014, THE NEWARK UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WAS 13.4%, A DECREASE FROM 15.4% IN 2010, BUT DOUBLE THE STATE RATE OF 6.4%.- IN 2014, 26.7% OF NEWARK RESIDENTS DID NOT COMPLETE HIGH SCHOOL, MORE THAN DOUBLE THE STATEWIDE PERCENTAGE (11.6%).- IN 2014, 43.2% OF NEWARK RESIDENTS WERE AGE 18-44, COMPARED TO 35.1% IN NEW JERSEY.- IN 2014, 39.0% OF NEWARK'S POPULATION WAS AFRICAN-AMERICAN, AND 30.4% WAS HISPANIC/LATINO.

FINANCIAL COUNSELING IS PROVIDED TO PATIENTS ABOUT THEIR PAYMENT OBLIGATIONS AND HOSPITAL BILLS. INFORMATION ON HOSPITAL-BASED FINANCIAL SUPPORT POLICIES AND EXTERNAL PROGRAMS THAT PROVIDE COVERAGE FOR SERVICES ARE MADE AVAILABLE TO PATIENTS DURING THE PRE-REGISTRATION AND REGISTRATION PROCESSES AND/OR THROUGH COMMUNICATIONS WITH PATIENTS SEEKING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. FINANCIAL COUNSELORS MAKE AFFIRMATIVE EFFORTS TO HELP PATIENTS APPLY FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PROGRAMS FOR WHICH THEY MAY QUALIFY AND THAT MAY ASSIST THEM IN OBTAINING AND PAYING FOR HEALTH CARE SERVICES. EVERY EFFORT IS MADE TO DETERMINE A PATIENT'S ELIGIBILITY PRIOR TO OR AT THE TIME OF ADMISSION OR SERVICE.SAINT MICHAEL'S MEDICAL CENTER OFFERS FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO PATIENTS WITH LIMITED MEANS. THE ORGANIZATION MAINTAINS AN OPEN MEDICAL STAFF, WITH PRIVILEGES AVAILABLE TO ALL QUALIFIED PHYSICIANS4.) CONTROL OF THE ORGAN1ZAT1ON RESTS WITH ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS, WHICH IS COMPRISED OF INDEPENDENT CIVIC LEADERS AND OTHER PROMINENT MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY5.) SURPLUS FUNDS ARE USED TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF PATIENT CARE, EXPAND AND RENOVATE FACILITIES AND ADVANCE MEDICAL CARE, PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES.

      SAINT MICHAEL'S MEDICAL CENTER IS A MEMBER OF TRINITY HEALTH, ONE OF THE LARGEST CATHOLIC HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEMS IN THE COUNTRY. TRINITY HEALTH ANNUALLY REQUIRES THAT ALL MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS DEFINE - AND ACHIEVE - SPECIFIC COMMUNITY HEALTH AND WELL-BEING GOALS.
